The Story of Lusty
Current refitted to better than new Ketch rigged 56 ft. Motorsailer yacht; custom built for deep water cruising. Three layered hulls; saturated grain balsa core. Hull and Deck were laid up and built by Columbia and designed by world-renowned Bill Tripp. Then it was custom finished by Marine Engineering in 1980 and set sail for the first voyage.
Lloyd's of London Rated the boat for unlimited range.
The boat was getting tired and starting to show usage problems after 15 years of sailing around several continents. The boat was hauled to hard, and approximately $240,000 was spent on updating all the working parts. Unfortunately, health conditions have halted the progress. The vessel is looking for a new owner who would like to finish this beauty with her final stages. All the necessary material, time-frame, and labor costs have been planned and outlined. She is just looking for the right owner who wants to complete and sail her away off into the sunset. Therefore, the seller is willing to hold the loan papers if the buyer would like to take over and finish her up. A substantial deposit would need to be made to consider this arrangement. The seller just wants to see her set sea again. For more questions, please contact the agent, Teresa.
The engine was sent back to Detroit Diesel, and it was completely overhauled and replaced except the crankshaft and main block.
The Majority of the expense is for purchasing a new sail and to choose electronics.
A bit more history:
The full construction took a little over three years of full-time work to complete the yacht. In the beginning, their plan was to cruise without problems to the South Pacific. Australia and New Zealand, but the Caribbean was so nice; they did not make further south.
She goes through weather very well and rode out four hurricanes in the Caribbean without a problem.
The boat is designed to have all the heavy tankage and equipment below the water line. Along with the 22,000 pounds of lead in the keel, makes the boat very stable and comfortable.
She has the following accommodations:
Three staterooms, two heads, and full showers, propane or electric galley; salon and galley combined. Each stateroom has a sink with hot and cold water. There are a workbench and storage for misc. parts, etc.
A newly rebuilt engine and propulsion, new Northern light gen set, new portholes, lights, Maytag washer and dryer, new tanks and new stainless deck hardware are some of the renovated changes and upgrades
Conventional sails designed for the average sailor to handle but she is appreciated more by the experienced sailor.
The current survey suggested sale price is about $290,000. Replacement cost is $930,000 The boat is priced for rapid sale. She needs about $50,000 invested to complete this custom Columbia classic.
