Personal Note from the Owners
Margay is a modern classic. She is one of a kind, a Wyliecat 30 optimized for safe coastal cruising with no loss of speed. Light, fast, dry and responsive to the touch, her graceful motion through the water is a joy to experience. Margay’s owners Ted Rust and Viva Knight, octogenarians, bought her, repowered her, and re-equipped her for day-sailing and light cruising along the West Coast. All changes were made in consultation with Tom Wiley and performed in the Bay Area by leading marine specialists like Bay Marine, KKMI, List Marine and Carlos Badell. She is ready to sail the Sea of Cortez, Catalina, the Santa Barbara Channel, San Francisco Bay and the San Juans. She retains and improves upon the delightful sailing qualities that Tom Wiley designed her for. She now has additional strength in the hull and steering system to survive what the ocean may throw at her. Ted holds a Ph.D. in regional planning (U.C.B.) and is a life-long sailor: he cruised a Penguin down the Hudson at the age of 13, was an Olympic semifinalist in the Finn class and won Cal20 National Championships in Southern California and San Francisco Bay in consecutive years. Viva, an award-winning TV producer, including Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, had never sailed until she became Margay’s First Mate and Chief Engineer. For five years, Margay fulfilled Ted’s love of sailing and gave Viva the experience of a lifetime.

Manufacturer Provided Description
The Wyliecat 30 was conceived with the premise that sailing doesn't need to be complicated to be fast and fun. The time-proven cat rig is at the center of this boat's performance. The 46-foot carbon-fiber mast was designed to bend two to three times the amount of a traditional carbon-fiber mast, allowing the top of the sail to "depower" as the wind increases, resulting in a simple self-reefing system. In really heavy weather, the wishbone rig can be reefed as easily as any standard sloop. Experiences in San Francisco Bay in 30 knots of wind, when other boats are reefing, have shown the Wyliecat 30 sails through the fleet with a full main. Wyliecats: Since launching their first Wyliecat - " Mustang Sally" - in 1992, Wyliecat has steadily grown into what is now a complete family of unique designs - including the 17, 30, 39, and the 48. All four designs have several common philosophical threads. While fast, Wyliecats are very easy boats to sail. No live ballast is required, making them great short handed sailing designs. Wyliecats use finesse - not force - with steering and sail handling in any wind or sea condition. In fact, one rarely uses a winch handle when trimming the sail. The hull form features a modest beam, exceptional stability, and clean, timeless aesthetics. Wyliecats use durable, strong, high-tech core construction in both the hull and deck. The freestanding epoxy carbon braided mast with wishbone boom distinguishes Wyliecats from other boats. Here is how it functions: as the apparent wind increases, the spar bends automatically; more bend happens aloft, allowing the sail to spill wind, thereby postponing reefing to 20 or 25 knot of wind. As the apparent wind decreases, the spar automatically becomes straighter, allowing a full sail with a more closed leech. The spar has been designed to bend in concert with the wishbone, sail, and hull - so the yacht always has a very gentle weather helm. Even with 40 percent of her sail reefed en route single-handed from Hawaii to San Francisco, the rig performed flawlessly. Our fully battened sail has lots of roach which feathers into neutral as the wind builds while going to windward. All this sail area is available in a very efficient plan form for light winds and running conditions. In fact, the total area is approximately 135 percent of the triangle described by the luff, leech, and foot.
